Ina Gersuny is a German contemporary artist working across photography and performance. Her practice explores alienation, consumer culture and the absurdity of contemporary rituals through highly stylised self-portraits and staged object compositions.

Using intense colour, flash-lit precision and an exaggerated high-glamour aesthetic, Gersuny constructs images that initially appear polished, seductive and playful. Beneath this surface, however, familiar objects, food and the body are displaced into increasingly uncanny scenarios, where beauty is set against decay, discomfort and visceral unease.

At the centre of Gersuny’s practice is the concept of “opulent horror”, her term for a deliberate distortion of reality in which artificial perfection and visual excess become tools for examining what it means to feel out of place within a hyper-functional society. Everyday routines are transformed into theatrical situations that oscillate between humour, attraction and psychological discomfort.  

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

Gersuny develops her photographic works through carefully constructed performances, self-portraiture and staged arrangements of everyday objects. Food, pearls, household products, fashion accessories and cosmetic materials become recurring elements within scenes that feel simultaneously familiar and strangely detached from ordinary life.  

Rather than documenting reality, she builds artificial environments in which colour, styling and composition are deliberately heightened. The visual language often borrows from advertising, fashion imagery and consumer aesthetics, only to undermine their promise of perfection through absurdity, excess and unexpected combinations.

Her own body frequently becomes part of the composition, functioning both as performer and material. Through this process, Gersuny examines the relationship between identity, desirability, consumption and social conformity. The resulting images occupy an unstable space between glamour and disgust, humour and estrangement, seduction and unease.

Across her practice, repetition of everyday gestures and consumer objects gradually turns the ordinary into something theatrical and psychologically charged. What initially looks playful or visually pleasurable often reveals a darker undercurrent, a characteristic tension that has become central to Gersuny’s distinctive visual language.

Gersuny studied Art History and Film at Freie Universität Berlin before completing a Bachelor’s degree in Costume and Make-up Design at BSP Berlin.
