EHSAN ARJMAND

Born 1982, Abadeh, Iran
Lives and works in Austria

Ehsan Arjmand is an Iranian contemporary artist whose practice centres on the human body and its relationship to identity, perception and surrounding space. Trained in sculpture and painting, he holds a BA in Sculpture from the University of Fine Arts in Tehran and an MA in Painting from the University of Science and Culture in Tehran.

Since his first solo exhibition in Tehran at the age of 23, Arjmand has developed a distinctive figurative language in which bodies appear fragmented, layered and entangled with abstract forms. Working across painting and drawing, he combines acrylic, ink and charcoal to construct images that move between physical presence and psychological states.

His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions internationally, including Austria, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, Albania, Greece, Sweden, Canada and the United Kingdom.

 ARTISTIC PRACTICE

The human body has remained central to Ehsan Arjmand’s practice throughout his career. Rather than treating the figure as a fixed anatomical subject, he approaches it as a shifting territory through which questions of identity, consciousness and interpersonal connection can be explored.

His recent paintings bring bodily narratives into contact with recurring abstract red forms. These elements function less as conventional symbols than as visual forces that penetrate, surround or disrupt the figure. Bodies overlap, dissolve and expand into their environment, creating compositions in which the boundary between internal and external experience becomes unstable.

Arjmand generally works without preparatory sketches. Images develop through spontaneous layers of colour, ink and texture, allowing accidental forms to influence the final composition. This process of finding structure within uncertainty is fundamental to his work.

Alongside his larger canvases, his works on paper reduce this language to a more immediate graphic form, using fluid lines, fragmented figures and areas of saturated red to explore bodily movement and psychological tension.
