CHRISTINA-SYLVIA SIMANTIRA

Greek-German visual artist Christina-Sylvia Simantira lives and works in Athens. Her practice moves across painting, sculpture and installation, exploring the relationship between material, process and perception through repetition, layering and intuitive construction.  

Working with markers, fabrics, ready-made objects, second-hand clothes and furniture, Simantira develops open-ended compositions in which forms emerge gradually through association and gesture. Her works often move between abstract landscape, organic structure and unfamiliar imagined spaces, allowing material itself to shape the direction of the work.  

Her broader practice also examines the ways identities, social roles, boundaries and hierarchies are formed and repeated. Everyday materials and familiar objects are transformed in order to question their habitual meanings and functions, often with a subtle element of self-irony and humour.    

Artist Biography

Christina-Sylvia Simantira is a Greek-German visual artist based in Athens. She studied German Language and Literature at the University of Athens and Visual Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where she developed her practice in the studio of Professor A. Antonopoulos. In 2015, she studied at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee through an Erasmus scholarship. In February 2025, she completed her Master of Fine Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts under the supervision of Professor Kostis Velonis.  

Since completing her undergraduate studies in 2016, she has collaborated with institutions including the Goethe-Institut in Athens and Munich, the German School of Athens and the University of Athens. She has also participated in DAAD-supported workshops and numerous exhibitions and projects in Greece and Germany.  

Her work has been presented at institutions and spaces including Kappatos Gallery, Platforms Project, the Municipal Gallery of Piraeus, the Municipal Gallery of the Cyclades and the Museum of the City of Athens. She has received awards from the Rosa Luxemburg Institute in Athens and the Athenian Centre for Kidney Disease, and has created two murals at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens.  

Artist Statement / Practice

Simantira’s practice begins with the line and the material itself. Rather than working toward a predetermined image, she allows forms to develop through repetition, layering and accumulation. One gesture leads to another, creating surfaces in which unfamiliar landscapes, organic structures and unexpected spatial relationships gradually emerge.  

Material plays an active role in this process. Markers, fabric, yarn, paper, ready-made objects and found materials are not simply supports, but become part of the conceptual structure of the work. Through painting, sculpture and installation, Simantira examines how perception and meaning are shaped through process, while also questioning established social structures, identity, gender roles and hierarchy.  

Her works remain deliberately open-ended, resisting fixed interpretation and instead creating a space in which gesture, material and association can generate their own internal logic.
