FRANCESCA BORGO

Born 1970, Italy
Lives and works in Treviso, Italy

Francesca Borgo is an Italian abstract painter whose practice explores the ways human relationships shape perception, memory and our experience of the world. Working primarily with acrylic, natural sand and mineral pigments, she creates layered surfaces in which forms appear to emerge, erode and dissolve.

Her background in cognitive neuroscience and psychology informs her interest in perception and emotional experience, while the paintings themselves remain grounded in material, light and natural processes. Drawing on the visual language of water, mountains, wind and geological formations, Borgo creates landscapes that do not describe specific places but function as emotional geographies shaped by connection, distance, memory and transformation.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

Borgo develops her paintings through successive layers of acrylic, natural sand and mineral pigments, adding, partially concealing, eroding and revealing material over time. The physical process becomes closely connected to the subject of the work: the way relationships accumulate, change and leave traces.

Rather than depicting recognisable landscapes, she uses natural phenomena as a visual vocabulary. Currents, erosion, sedimentation, mountains, wind and shifting light become metaphors for vulnerability, resilience and continuous transformation. Forms seem to move between solidity and disappearance, creating spaces that feel simultaneously geological and psychological.

Across canvas, linen, Yupo and other surfaces, Borgo’s work is characterised by a restrained palette, tactile materiality and recurring wave-like formations. The result is a body of work in which landscape functions less as a place than as a way of describing the invisible forces through which people affect one another.
