ABOUT THE ARTIST

Natalija Stamenković (b. 1999, Sokobanja, Serbia) is a visual artist based in Belgrade. She holds both a BA and MA in Painting from the Faculty of Arts, University of Niš, where she received several academic distinctions, including an award for outstanding artistic achievement during her master’s studies.

Her practice is centred around painting and is gradually expanding into objects and spatial installations. Stamenković has presented five solo exhibitions in Serbia and Montenegro and participated in more than forty group exhibitions, international art colonies and collaborative projects.

Alongside her studio practice, she has worked within curatorial and gallery contexts, including as programme coordinator and assistant curator at Grafički Kolektiv Gallery in Belgrade. Her works are held in private collections.

ABOUT THE WORK

At the centre of Natalija Stamenković’s practice is Planet 22, an evolving imaginary world through which she examines belonging, orientation and the desire for control within contemporary life.

Drawing from personal experiences, memories, dreams, social patterns and contemporary visual culture, Stamenković transforms familiar references into invented landscapes, symbols and architectural forms. Each painting operates as a fragment of a larger fictional territory, suggesting a world that continues beyond the physical boundaries of the canvas.

Simplified forms, disrupted perspectives, tactile surfaces and intense colour relationships create images that initially appear playful and accessible, yet often contain an underlying sense of uncertainty, isolation or unease. This tension between visual attraction and psychological instability is central to the work.

Rather than treating Planet 22 as a fixed fictional universe, Stamenković approaches it as a long-term artistic system that continues to evolve across painting, text, objects and spatial installations.
