AINDREAS SCHOLZ

BIO

Born to an Anglo-Irish mother and a Sudeten-German father, Scholz is an award-winning London-based photographer whose unique background informs his creative practice. Specialising in analogue photographic printing processes and practices, he merges 19th-century darkroom techniques with contemporary, sustainable methods, forging a dialogue between historical craftsmanship and ecological awareness. His work investigates the interplay among humans, non-humans, and the natural world, shedding light on issues like environmental fragility, geological time, and anthropogenic climate change.
Scholz’s projects have appeared in numerous European exhibitions, including the Rotterdam Photo Festival 2022 XL (Netherlands), Climanosco 2022 (Switzerland), and the Rotlicht Festival for Analog Photography 2023 (Austria), where he was a joint winner. His pieces have been acquired by notable institutions and collectors such as the Office of Public Works (Ireland), the NHS Foundation Trust (England), IBASHO Gallery (Belgium), and Frederic de Goldschmidt (Belgium).

In 2024, Scholz was a finalist at the Vintage Grand Prix in Bydgoszcz (Poland). His ongoing series, And So I Watch You From Afar, exemplifies his commitment to environmental dialogue by using camera-less photographic processes, often incorporating natural and repurposed materials. Through these techniques, he fosters a deeper conversation about our planet’s precarious state, prompting viewers to contemplate humanity’s impact on fragile ecosystems. By weaving together personal heritage, historic processes, and current ecological concerns, Scholz positions his practice at the forefront of a vital, ever-evolving conversation about our shared future.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I shoot on a mobile phone, challenging the boundaries of traditional photography. By using unconventional settings and amplifying colors during post-processing, Idisrupt the frame and bring dark, blurred materials to life. Digital noise, often seenas a flaw, becomes my primary creativetool — turning imperfections into thefoundation of a new visual language.

Color is central to my process. It lets mereshape the context and mood of anobject. Instead of looking to photographyfor inspiration, I turn to painting to explore color palettes and compositions. My work merges classical artistictraditions with contemporary aesthetics, finding balance between concept and vividexpression.
