ANDREY MAKALKIN      

BIO

Born in 1997 in Moscow Region, Russia.As a teenager, he developed a passion forphotography and computer graphics,creating digital collages. In 2016, heentered VGIK (All-Russian State Instituteof Cinematography) to studycinematography. During his studies, heshot short films and music videos thatparticipated in film festivals. At the sametime, he worked as a gaffer and lightingdesigner.

Towards the end of his studies, Andrey grew fascinated with art history andsought ways to merge photography withpainting. He developed a unique shooting and editing technique where soft focus and digital noise blend into vibrant colorpatches. Currently, he lives and works inMoscow.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I shoot on a mobile phone, challenging the boundaries of traditional photography. By using unconventional settings and amplifying colors during post-processing, Idisrupt the frame and bring dark, blurred materials to life. Digital noise, often seenas a flaw, becomes my primary creativetool — turning imperfections into thefoundation of a new visual language.

Color is central to my process. It lets mereshape the context and mood of anobject. Instead of looking to photographyfor inspiration, I turn to painting to explore color palettes and compositions. My work merges classical artistictraditions with contemporary aesthetics,finding balance between concept and vividexpression.
